I’m about to erase your mind. Relax, it won’t hurt. The important thing here is to be able to grow your business — (and your client’s — so you can have a healthy mind regarding…
We need to break the lies that are stuck in your head, like ticks.
SEO lies. SEO myths. You need to know this before giving up because “nothing works”. But that’s many digital marketers reality nowdays because NOTHING WILL WORK if you are playing the wrong moves. Or believing in the wrong moves. You are trapped into a realm of SEO pain and you can’t get out of it.
But not you. Not anymore. (thanks for the line Jingsaw)
Now let’s demystify things. Let’s break these SEO lies forever. So, check below if you are playing the game with one of these myths in your daily strategies.
LIE #1: “YOU’LL GET PENALIZED FOR BUYING LINKS”
Relax. Don’t be shocked. Here’s the deal:
BUT THEY DON’T DO IT ONLINE
Yes. Look, I’m not saying here that you should grab all your investment power and inject it on great websites by buying a link or two on each and every single one of them. No. I do believe in the “Build Extremely GREAT content” formula because it works if you know how to use it.
Besides, if you buy links and get people to check your website/blog, then now what?
Will you show this to them?
No. You need great content. And I mean REALLY GOOD content! Because are those pieces of lines and all those articles and blog posts which will expand your business, bringing it to the big boys level. Nowadays, you can’t only rely on PPC campaigns, social shares or anything else that can only BRING people in if you can’t maintain people on your digital door.
You need content. You need to show off. You need to overflow expertise in order to gain authority.
PS: By the way, Moz said something really good about content here.
But that’s not the full picture, because you also need links. And that’s why many big websites do it, so they can stay at the top and rank faster but they buy links in “offline mode”. This is not new. Big corporations are building huge sources of traffic by making deals like these for years. Years.
“Hey, you have authority. I’ll pay you to create a totally awesome content on your website and include my company’s link in a way that it looks totally natural. Agree?”
“Sure. Just show me the money.”
And although Google Street View is taking pictures of us in the backyard, they can’t fully understand what’s going on on those pictures so they can’t bust us buying links offline.
So put this inside your head:
- 1. Companies DO BUY links, buy they do it offline and they make the link look natural
- 2. They DON’T overuse this technique because THAT will look suspicious
- 3. Link building is the real rule that builds traffic and the smart guys know that
Yes you can create great content, yes you can buy some Ads here and there, but in order to really rank, you must do link building.
You can either read about it, or use a very great tool to stand out in the crowd. Either way, you need to build links. It’s counts. A lot.
And that was just SEO lie #1, here me out on the next ones.
You’ll probably get surprised…
LIE #2: “DOMAIN AUTHORITY IS THE NEW RULE. PROMOTION IS DEAD”
No, it’s not. Can you assume for a moment what would happen to the new business owners if that statement was true? Here, I’ll tell you:
You just created an awesome product.
It’s innovative, it’s pretty, it’s shiny and easily affordable.
Now….just because you are brand new in the market you couldn’t rank high on Google or his friends?
Of course not. Big websites with HUGE DA ( Domain Authority ) may have all the Internet backlinks pointing right to their faces, but………
If you have a really good thing going on…
And if you promote your company, your services, your ebook or your products on at least 3000 (hypothetical number) websites by interacting with the owners through:
- social connections
What would happen to you?
Success. That is what would happen.
You may even have a product that is similar, but PR is surely not dead.
LIE #3: “PROMOTING YOUR EXACT CONTENT ON OTHER SITES WILL GIVE YOU LINKS”
No, it won’t. Duplicate content. That is what it will give you. You think you are smart by throwing your own unique content on a bigger website expecting that his bigger audience will bring you high-quality traffic and other SEO signals?
Guess again, because Google doesn’t think like that.
Really think about this for a second my friend…..
- 1. You work hard to create a masterpiece
- 2. You take that, and publish on your own blog/website
- 3. You take that exact same article, and ask for a bigger website to publish it too
Google: “HEY! Great content here on this big website!”
Google: “Wait….who is this small guy saying the EXACT same thing?!”
Google: “Don’t duplicate content my friend. Here’s a drop on your ranking because of that.”
Can we move on now?
LIE #4: “ARTICLES OR BLOG POSTS SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST 400 words”
Some claim that in the old days of SEO, this rule used to be true. But not because of the word count itself, but because of the keyword stuffing technique. Bloggers and Internet Marketers used to write a little piece of content that didn’t bring any value to users, stuffed it with smart keywords and….
That was it.
Well, that game is over.
Now Google knows if you are playing this game like a robot. He knows you are writing and publishing bot-oriented content so that’s why you MUST remember this rule below:
One day you are happy and because of that you write a 3000-word article. Another day, you just found out that your TV series show — Revenge? Seriously? — got canceled, so you end up writing a 1200-word article. Get it? Human-mode.
Don’t stick to a number.
Eventually, that number will change because SEO rules change. Fast.
Now that people are more aware of the skyscrapper technique, an army of digital marketers from around the world are right now typing their own 9000-word article. This will eventually CHANGE how we write content.
Just write the awesome content for people, be objective and play a little bit. Be awesome. Be yourself. Be your brand. You need to look natural, remember that. Because if you write to human beings, then Google will eventually like you.
LIE #5: “PUBLISH A LOT OF USELESS CONTENT FAST AND YOU WILL RANK HIGHER”
Ok, what’s wrong with people when they take this approach? Here is some translation to this:
When you think about SEO, the very first thing you must ask yourself is this:
An online business is not built differently than an offline business. You must pay attention to design. You must pay attention to how your website receives people. You must pay attention to giving the best answers possible and you must provide expertise. In our digital world, we are just as same as a physical store, with the same difference that people are looking now for the clever people who can answer their questions first.
This SEO lie is like creating LOTS of Ads with kindergarten knowledge and market the Ads to the whole city. If people see that you don’t know what you are talking about and that you only know the basic stuff, then W-H-Y should they advance in negotiations with you?
Don’t unleash content that won’t help people. Build a better online world.
Help us, because believe me, we are needing people who think like that online.
LIE #6: “TOP RANKINGS GUARANTEED!”
Maaaaaaaan this is just PRICELESS!!! Wow! Did I use the same word most fake SEOs use? Something like this perhaps?
Don’t be foolish. If a certain SEO is stating that he guarantees top rankings then he’s lying. Yes, lying. There are no SEOs out there that can guarantee (which means 100% certain) top rankings for a website. Well, maybe Larry Page and Sergey Brin, but they don’t count.
“Even for big websites Peterson?”
Yes. Even for big websites that is a lie. Stop and think about it for a moment about this….
THINK WITH ME!
Our digital world is growing and growing every single day….
Smart digital marketers are bring their big guns and using great marketing techniques to the field…
And to finish things over, one big website can implement a technique that the other one is not yet aware of.
And with that, they outwork or outsmart another big website. Besides that, there is the Google factor. Your client might get hit by Panda. Or maybe Mobilegeddon. Or maybe 9 other big enough websites might implement a new tool and through its results, reach a whole different level at rankings, thus, pushing your client’s website to the 2nd page.
Nobody can guarantee top rankings.
LIE #7: “GUEST BLOGGING IS NOW DEAD TOO”
Another lie. What is dead is the weak link exchange on websites that is not related to your own website. I will explain better. For example, check my own website. I write about:
- Digital Marketing
- Personal Development
Now, what would happen if I did a partnership with a website that is about “cooking”? Could I benefit from guest posts there? Of course not! That’s what Google hates: fake links. Search engines are getting smarter and smarter and they are prepared to analyze RELEVANCE.
They know when you are guest posting just to build a backlink.
And they know when you are building a link with a crowd that will get a benefit from your content.
Search engines are very aware of this difference.
But guest posting is not dead, you just need to do it the right way. Focus on guest posting for the right websites and you’ll have a SEO boost, get more visitors, leads, and clients. Just remember that it’s all about being real and trustworthy.
And of course, if you would truly care about your audience, you wouldn’t build useless links by linking to the wrong places.
Now let’s move on because we are almost in the end.
LIE #8: “HIGH BOUNCE RATE = LOSS OF RANKINGS”
And here we go again! Another myth. Another lie. And made just for you. Look, first you need to understand what is, in fact, a bounce rate. So here is the definition from Google himself:
Now pay attention here in what I’m about to say.
What would happen IF…
1. A person lands on a page where you are focusing on building an email list?
2. You create a landing page for a specific group of people who are within your whole visitors?
3. People register on a landing page but the final step redirects them to a different domain?
That’s right. Bounce rate on steroids.
User engagement on the other hand, now that’s a bit of a problem. And one thing which is good to analyze and to worry about. You need grab data and analyze it from a panoramic point of view. Consider everything. Everything.
For instance, ask yourself this:
- What is the PURPOSE of this page?
- Is this page CONNECTED with another page?
- Is this page in the middle of a 3-step process and is being wrongly indexed?
Those are just a few options that might help you view bounce rates in a different way because looking at the metrics only through the numbers, will KILL your strategies. You won’t be able to interpret things right, and it will cause you to build a wrong marketing strategy as a result.
So that’s why you must consider the whole picture when analyzing bounce rates.
Now let’s continue.
LIE #9: “YOU CAN’T RANK NOW EXCEPT WITH PRIVATE BLOG NETWORKS (PBN)”
Another lie. Look, although PBNs are a very nice way to improve your rankings, they are NOT the only way to outrank your competitors. They do have good power, but they are not the only option available.
And yes, real PBNs stay private (aha!) so they can play at stealth mode in order to generate awesome and solid results. People forget that a factor called “PRIVATE” is part of the equation too. What I mean by this??
Here is what I mean, friend:
Generally speaking, a true PBN is custom built. For each website. The necessary dots regarding YOUR website will be made and a whole blog network will be separated just for your business situation. Is not about:
“Hey! I have a PBN network! Get in so you can be happier with your SEO results! Tweet this to Google too!”
Remember what I said about buying links?
It needs to look natural. If the whole world knows you are building a PBN, then I guess is not private. Well, that’s my definition of private at least.
LIE #10: “SOCIAL SIGNALS IS WHAT REALLY MATTERS NOW”
Final lie. The social stuff. Yes, search engines are looking into social signals to see if your content is being shared, liked, favorited and all that good and happy things but that IS NOT the new main rule for top ranking.
Social signals indeed are good because it means people are enjoying what you are sharing, writing etc. They tell Google that you are like a good force of the Internet and that you are giving birth to great content online.
But if you think you are going to rank with social signals alone, then go play outside.
This SEO adventure is not for you.
Google is smart. They know people are capable of building tools that can boost social signals. Google KNOWS that tools can be built to fake a 10.000 followers profile on Twitter or Facebook or any other social network. So why would you assume that “social love” is the new rule?
A 5-year old could create a search engine that only listens to social signals.
(Ok that last sentence was a lie.)
And you think you are the “smart guy” when you buy these signals from India/China?
Come on, THINK! Behind Google there are only experts. They know the web better than a guy who can connect his tool with a social network’s API just to create something that can fake success.
That’s why social signals are not the new SEO boss right now and it probably won’t be. So if you are spending money on shortcuts, stop. Now. It won’t work and it will only bring you weak or no results at all.
Besides, you can get a Google Penalty as a gift.
RESET YOUR MIND!
Now you know the truth. People might have tricked you out there with some of these lies and you had experienced sad results from your SEO efforts. Unfortunately, fake SEOs are deceiving people around the globe. And unfortunately, they will continue to do so. People will still fall into those myths.
But not you. Not anymore.
